We bought this one to replace an old Radio Shack unit that was starting to wear out. Initially we were looking at a Panasonic unit that offered call blocking, a feature we wanted to stop those annoying telemarketing calls. After some searching I found this unit, which also offered the call blocking capability. After some serious comparison shopping we opted to go with this unit, which so far we have not regretted at all. It’s relatively easy to set up, although the directions leave a bit to be desired in my opinion. We bought an additional unit for this and all three remote units easily synched with the base unit. One unit did have a totally dead battery in it, but it quickly recharged after being left on the charger. We can’t begin to say how much we love the call blocking feature. It’s remarkably easy to add a number, either when it’s ringing or by searching through the call history. Suddenly our house is much quieter now and we can actually get some peace and quiet knowing this unit is stopping those pesky telemarketers. The one feature I wish it had is a lighted push to talk button. If you pick up the phone in the dark you can’t tell which button is the one to push to answer it, which can be kind of annoying if you’ve been woken up to answer the phone. While the keypad is lighted, it would be most helpful if the other buttons were as well. We’ve also found the battery to last a long time, which is refreshing given the fact that our old Radio Shack batteries were starting to wear out. Overall we’re very happy with this new unit and would happily recommend it to anyone looking for a phone that has lots of features, a good price, and nice styling.

Update – 3 May 2010: I’m still happy with this phone although the call block feature fills up rather quickly. It only holds about 20 numbers, so I’ve found it has filled up way too fast. It would be great if Uniden would expand that capability as I have lots of numbers I would like to add to the list.

Uniden must have read my review of the Uniden DXAI5588-2 5.8 GHz Analog Cordless Phone with Dual Handsets (Silver and Black), because this phone solves almost all my complaints, and adds some nice new features.

You can talk on more than one extension at a time, you can copy stored phone numbers between all handsets, you can control the answering machine and check messages from any handsets. All extensions and the base have speakerphones. The time is automatically synchronized between all extensions and the base, so you only set it once.

It also has some cellphone type features. You can specify different ringtones for different people (though there’s only 6), or for different handsets. You can block certain numbers, or block private or unknown numbers. If someone is in your phone book, their name is displayed even if you don’t have caller id. It’s pretty easy to figure it out without using the instructions, but you might want to look at them just to discover all the cool features.

What else… there’s an intercom feature for talking between the handsets, a battery charge indicator on each handset, the voicemail controls are all marked on the number keys. The base has buttons to turn the answering system on and off, a do-not-disturb mode which will send all calls straight to voicemail, and a find-handset button. You can name each handset which is used for the phonebook copying, find-handset, intercom, and other functions.

We’ve had zero problems with sound quality or interference. All around it’s a great phone and I’m glad to see some of the more advanced features showing up on landline phones.

I have no problems with the performance of the phones. Sound quality and distance are fine.

What I did not realize until too late was:

1. You cannot use both phones at once. This is really surprising and annoying when two people want to be on a conversation.

2. There is no “mute” feature, neither when on handset nor on speakerphone. This is a significant problem when on a long conference call where you are mostly listening in.

It looks so much like my other Uniden cordless set (a two-line model) that I assumed it also had these same, basic features.

Update 1 month later: Both handsets now die at random during phone calls. I’ve just thrown the phones out. They are clearly inferior to other Uniden phones I’ve had. I’ve replaced this model with Uniden TRU9485.

I’d change the rating to one star, but apparently one cannot edit the star # in an existing review.

I bought these phones to replace my 5 year old phone… it had issues as you will be able to assume. These phones were easy to set up, and have been great. Reception is good in every room of my home. The only down side is that reception is not great in the yard. Fine for everyday use, and easy to read caller id built in is a plus.

Uniden TCX905 Accessory Handset and Charger with Call Waiting and Caller ID Reviews

I bought two of these to supplement my Uniden Tru8888 after researching compatibility. While the software driving these phones has much of the interface of the TCX805/Tru888x line, I’ll cut my stars accordingly for the Tru888x line. Comments about this expansion handset:

- The four-way joystick-like button is a blessing. The up-down buttons on the TCX805 are OK but the left-right buttons fail to work when editing a number in the phone book especially to add the 1 before an area code. They instead add # and *. Here, you don’t have to re-type the whole number, just move where you want with the joystick. The odd but subsequently convenient Space typed by right-arrowing in text is gone, apparently replaced by the character range on zero, one of which is a space. Operation in low light is a lot easier with the big joystick button.

- Two numbers per phonebook entry seems to be new here, and I like it.

- The quality of sound, range and the clarity of the speakerphone on the handset remain excellent.

- They seem to mate to a TCX805 charger but don’t seem to fit in right. So if you have a mix, don’t interchange their charger bases.

- I like the overall feel and I prefer using the 905′s in the bedrooms (where you might have to use them in the dark) and the 805 remains in the living room.

I’ll update with my experiences as I continue to use them. For now, the TCX905 gets all five stars.

Good phone for the price. I have a CLX485 base. A matching extension phone (TCX440) costs almost 0. This phone is only from Amazon (including shipping). It couples easily with my base & TCX440. I upload my Outlook phone file to the TCX440 than sent the phone files to the TCX905. The TCX440 permits 4 phone numbers per person, the TCX905 permits only 2 phone numbers per person. However, the TCX905 handles any phone numbers above 2 in an intelligent way – it creates an additional listing with the same name containing the additional numbers — SMART!! I agree with a previous reviewer that this phone is even better than the more expensive TCX805 model.

However, it does have its faults.

1. You must manually edit all phone numbers requiring a 1 prefix. The phone knows its area code (part of the setup menu). Instead of automatically adding a 1 to all phone numbers out of your area code, it makes you edit each and every out of town number. STUPID!!

2. I found an insidious quirk. I have 7 doctors’ phone numbers. I preface each doctor’s name with “Dr”. This keeps all doctors names in one area – easy to find. Unfortunately, it drops the last doctor’s entry when transferring numbers from the base. No fault is generated; it indicates that the transfer is successful. You think that all phone numbers are transferred. The problem was corrected by changing one preface from “Dr” to “Doc”. Apparently, a max of 6 entries can have the same first 2 letters. Anything above 6 is just ignored. – STRANGE!!
